Do you ever wish there was a survival manual that came in the mail as soon as you made the decision to become an entrepreneur? I use to feel that way. Honestly, I felt that same way about my first kid; we used Google for everything. When Amara, our oldest, had weird colored poop or anything we weren't familiar with which is a lot since she was our first kid ever, we looked to Google as our guide. Needless to say, we were on Google a lot. At least I was. I freely admit it. People would try to encourage us saying, "you'll know what to do - it comes naturally."
Um, I call bullsh*t!
My instincts were not to be trusted considering I was running off of high emotions and sleepless nights. So Google it was. Here's the thing, Google was useful, but I was swimming in information. The same was true of the vast number of baby books. Now, it's not Google's fault nor was it the authors, but when you're up to your eyeballs in helpful information you can't help but be more overwhelmed then when you first started.
What does any of this have to do with business? Hear me out. If baby books and Google searches started with a blanket statement like:
"No, you aren't crazy. It really is as hard as it feels. And yes, this too shall pass. Pinky swear."
I might've coped a bit better and not been so hard on myself. I feel like that was the reassurance I needed at the time. Since then, I now reassure every single mom I see. I remind them that babies are hard and instagram photos are simply the happy moments in between the super hard ones we don't see. I do whatever I can to encourage the moms and dads that have that tell-tale sign of sleep deprivation and anxiety on their face, reminding them that this too shall pass.
Now back to business and how this all relates. Simply, I went through a lot of the same things in my business. A few fears I faced were:
For the record, you'll make a ton of mistakes, but that's good. It means you're doing something and have a plethora of lessons to now guide you. Starting before you know everything teaches you what matters, what doesn't and what you actually need to learn. Kudos to you for starting. So you're headed in the wrong direction? Who cares?!?! Change course. Where you begin is NOT where you will end. Let me just say, thank God for that! There's a reason its referred to as the entrepreneurial journey.
Today's episode is a reminder that all of us make mistakes. Some mistakes are more universal than others. I covered 6 that I've found to be a common theme among my clients and that I've also encountered myself.
Good luck, God speed, may the force be with you. Welcome to the journey of entrepreneurship. It's hard AF, but one heck of a ride.
